Basic Concepts of Action Theory

Part of the Synthese Library book series (SYLI, volume 116)

It is a central feature of our causal theory of action that the basic action concepts involve causality. As we now have developed an account of purposive causation and generation we can refine our action concepts accordingly. We will define in detail such concepts as basic action, bodily action, generated action, and action token. We will also analyze arbitrary complex actions below and thus lay bare their structure. Everything we have said about actions and action-explanations in the earlier chapters will remain intact, for we will only add some more details into the total picture.
