Abstract

I am going to talk about the use of CNO observations as an indicator of phenomena which are important to a star’s evolution. During the cool red giant stage, molecular lines are observed from which CNO isotope ratios and abundances can be determined. It is also during this stage that a surface convection zone penetrates into the interior mixing out material which was processed via the CNO tricycle (Iben 1964, 1966). Comparison of observed isotope ratios (or abundances) with theoretical expectations can then be used as a check on the occurrence of such phenomena as convection, meridional mixing, and mass loss.
