Abstract
Until recently no visible wavelength line of a secondary isotopic species of any atom or molecule had been detected in the interstellar medium with the sole exception of the λ4232 line of 13CH+ which is seen in absorption against ζOph (Bortolot and Thaddeus, 1969; Vanden Bout, 1972). This single line together with rocket observations of the CO ultraviolet bands (Smith and Stecher, 1969) has provided our total knowledge of the relative abundance of 13C in the very local (d < 200 pc) interstellar gas contained in the diffuse clouds typified by the ζOph cloud.
