Part of the Synthese Library book series (SYLI, volume 109)

In Section A I describe some general aspects of scientific progress and discuss the role of the unification program in the progress of science. This discussion is concerned with dynamic theories, but scientific progress also involves our knowledge and understanding of developmental and evolutionary processes. Section B describes some important relationships between the unification program and our explanations of these processes. These first two sections outline some general motivations for the unification program. Section C concludes the book with a few remarks on some further problems and prospects.
