Effects of Cations of Groups IA and IIA on Crown Ethers

Changes in conformation of macrocyclic polyether (crown) molecules on complex formation with alkali and alkaline earth metal cations are described. An empirical relation (Brown and Shannon) for metal-oxygen distance gives approximate electrostatic attraction terms while four different relations are compared for calculations of conformational energies. Repulsive interactions between cations and some methylene hydrogen atoms probably account for the stoicheiometry 1:1 or 1:2 of the complexes of benzo-15-crown-5.
