Report on a preparation of butyl alcohol: Haemostypticum Revici®

Abstract

Haemostypticum Revici® (HR) is simply butanol (butyl alcohol). The preparation is named after its initiator, Dr. E. Revici, director of the Institute of Applied Biology in New York. HR contains n-butanol, citric acid and disaccharides. According to Kuschinsky (1968) the preparation sometimes contained trillium, a chemically undefined substance (Trillium is a genus of liliaceous plants) which is also supposed to have haemostyptic activity. HR is marketed in capsules in an oral mixture and as injections in saline.
