Report on a preparation of oestriol succinate: Styptanon®

  • Chapter
Haemostatic Drugs

Abstract

Oestriol disodium succinate was introduced as a haemostatic agent by Organon about twelve years ago. In the Netherlands it is still sold under what our American colleagues call the‘grandfather clause’, in other words, it counts as an old drug which has not yet been evaluated for efficacy and safety by the Netherlands Committee for the Evalution of Medicines. In current promotional literature the manufacturer recommends that the product be administered parenterally in cases of capillary bleeding during or after surgical operations, and in parenchymal bleeding. It is also recommended for‘conditions associated with derangement of permeability and fragility of the capillaries’. Doses of 20 mg are injected once or twice; they can be given either intravenously or intramuscularly.

Other preparations of oestriol succinate: Ovestin®.
