Abstract

The woody biomass from trees, shrubs, herbs and crop residues are an important source of fuelwood, charcoal, petroleum Substitutes/alcohol and tinder, especially in the developing countries. The energy released can be used to fuel railway engines, electricity generators, dryers for fish, tobacco, lumber, grain, copra, etc., sugar factories, pottery, brick, charcoal, and limestone kilns, metal smelters, etc., as well as meeting domestic requirements (BOSTID, 1980; Cook, 1995).
