Abstract

One goal of this manuscript is to delineate the progress (1950-2000) of the study of the paramagnetic ’point’ defects in crystalline silicon dioxide (α-quartz), leaning more than a little on the expository and previous review articles [17] produced by this author. The present manuscript makes no attempt to duplicate these compendia, but will update them to some extent. A second major goal is to point out some of the present problems and conundrums in this area of research, as seen through the (somewhat myopic) eyes of the author, and to establish the crucial need for further research effort expended on the quartz single-crystal system.
