The Role of Classical Novae in the Galactic Nucleosynthesis

Book cover The Evolution of The Milky Way

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 255))

Abstract

The outbursts of classical novae result from thermonuclear runaways occurring in the H-rich envelopes accreted onto the white dwarf components of nova systems. Theempiricalassessment of the contribution of novae to the chemical evolution of the Milky Way needs threequantities:1) the galactic nova rate (average number of nova outbursts per year); 2) the mass of the ejected envelopes; 3) the abundances of heavy elements in the nova ejecta.
