Abstract
I review the important observational constraints relevant to the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and compare the various theoretical interpretations given for these constraints in the past years. In particular, I stress the important role played by supernovae of different type in understanding the element-to-element ratios versus metallicity as well as the meaning of the G-dwarf metallicity distribution and the abundance gradients along the disk relative to the formation and the evolution of the Galaxy.
