Abstract

Recently amorphous carbon films having a high sp3 bonding content referred to as tetrahedrally bonded amorphous carbon (ta-C) have attracted much attention due to their extreme properties which can approach those of diamond [1]. Potential applications of ta-C films include their use as ultra-thin protective coatings for media and magnetic disks [2], use in the production of cold cathodes [3], passivation layers in high power electronic devices, fuel cells/batteries and solar cells [4] and even for transistor manufature [5].
