Abstract

Willem Johan Kolff was born in 1911 as the eldest son in a doctor’s family. His father, Dr Jaap Kolff, was director of the sanatorium in Beekbergen, just north of Arnhem. While strolling with his son in the neighbourhood be used to make him familiar with the responsibility which he felt as a doctor towards his patients.

He died unexpectedly in the summer of 1945. He was particularly interested in the exchange of gases and solutes between the blood of animals and their environmental (water or air) and it would have been interesting to hear his comments when Kolff obtained his doctorate in January 1946!
