Abstract
Kolff’s departure to Cleveland in 1950 caused a standstill in the development of dialysis in the Netherlands. The more so because Professor Borst at the University of Amsterdam preferred a low-protein, high-carbohydrate and fat diet for the treatment of renal patients. In addition he considered the risk of damage to the red blood cells by dialysis to be too high. The rotating kidney which Kolff had sent to Professor Borst’s clinic in the University Hospital in Amsterdam was hence left unemployed.
