Early Detection and Intervention Through Integration With Primary Health Services: The Buckingham Project

Early Intervention in Psychotic Disorders

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((ASID,volume 91))

Abstract

Epidemiological studies indicate that at any given time one-fifth of adults may be experiencing a mental disorder [1-5]. Most of these cases are mild, self-limiting disorders, and specialist help is rarely sought [6]. In countries with extensive family practice around 90% of psychiatric consultations and treatment are dealt with exclusively by the primary care services [4, 7-8]. In the US, where family practice is not universal the proportion of people with mental disorders who are treated by primary care providers is reduced to around 60% [6, 9-10]. The 10% of cases referred to specialist services include many suffering from the most severe forms of mental illness. However, referral to mental health specialists are not based exclusively on the severity of the disorder [8].
