The Concept of Honor, Conflict and Violent Behavior Among Youths in Oslo

  • Chapter
The Eurogang Paradox

Abstract

In a recent study of gang behavior in Oslo (Lien and Haaland, 1998, a project undertaken in collaboration with the organization Youth Against Violence), we found that the center of Oslo has become an arena for new groups of youth operating on the streets. Some of these groups are multicultural and have a high level of crime. They have links with Norwegian and foreign criminal environments. As part of the project, we conducted fieldwork among youth that were members of and in other ways connected to Youth Against Violence. We also distributed a questionnaire to a strategic sample of 85 informants, aged 13 to 18. The results of the study showed a significant correlation between criminality and gang membership.
