Abstract
In recent years it has become apparent that traditional techniques of typing bacterial strains, i.e., antibiogramm analysis, biotyping, bacteriophage typing, and serotyping, often do not provide enough discriminatory power to definitively characterize clusters of isolates that may represent an outbreak of microbial disease. At the same time, the sensitivity of traditional methods is very often too low to detect trace amounts of biological material. It is obvious that a sensitive method which can detect and unequivocally identify biological samples in a short period of time would be preferable and relevant for the detection of biological and toxin warfare (BTW) agents.
