Abstract
Biological warfare in its rich variations, though largely a non-event so far, has rightly become a central concern of the security and arms control communities. In the history of warfare, this is a strange and unusual phenomenon. In the normal course of events, means of warfare have attracted the highest degree of attention only after serious experiences with their employment in battle have revealed the magnitude of the problem. The evolution of thinking on the other two type of weapons that are dubbed “weapons of mass destruction” illustrates this point.
