Abstract

We study the ground state phase diagram of undoped spin ladders. It is shown that in two leg spin ladders depending on the sign of the interchain coupling there exist two types of the gapfull Haldane phase differing in the topology of the short range valence bonds. These phases can be distinguished by the absence or presence of appropriately defined string order parameters. It is also shown that the mechanism of gap generation is different in two-leg and four-leg ladders. This explaines the narrow Haldane regime in S > 1 spin systems.
