Abstract

We report on the effects of carbon non-stoichiometry and of annealing conditions on the superconducting (SUP) properties of HoNi2B2Cx (x from 0.6 to 1.4). Using nuclear- and electron- probe microanalysis, respectively NPMA and EPMA, we show that for samples with x=0.8, 1.0 and 1.2, (from non SUP to SUP via re-entrance) the final carbon-compositions of the matrix when x≤l follow the general tendency of the nominal compositions whereas for x>l the final composition is x=l. We will discuss these results in relation with the various observed physical behaviors. The non-stoichiometry is also accommodated by the formation of several secondary phases. Our results indicate also that HoNi2B2C has a domain of existence on the C-poor side and, if it exists, a very narrow one on the C-rich side.
