Abstract

For RNi2B2Cwith R = Ho, Dy, Nd, Tb and Er magnetoelastic effects are investigated by high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments on polycrystalline samples. For compounds with R = Ho and Dy a magnetostriction induced tetragonal to orthorhombic lattice distortion along the [110] direction is observed. For compounds with R = Tb and Er the distortion occurs along the [100] and [010] directions, respectively. The value of the lattice distortion is proportional to the squared ordered magnetic moment.
