Abstract
Energetic electrons which are generated in solar flares can propagate along open magnetic field lines in the solar corona and the inner heliosphere. These electrons can generate Langmuir waves with a frequency of approximately fp = (ne/πm)1/2 in the thermal plasma via the bump-on-tail instability (e.g. Benz, 1992). A part of the Langmuir waves is transformed into electromagnetic waves by scattering processes at the fundamental fp or the harmonic of the plasma frequency 2fp (e.g. Melrose, 1985).
