Abstract
After listing the general properties of Clusters of Galaxies we discuss the status of the Cluster Luminosity Function and further stress the need of wide angle, good space resolution and reasonably deep surveys in the X-rays. The aim of these surveys would be to observe and measure the cosmic evolution of clusters and compile a catalogue for future detailed observations using large space and ground based telescopes. We also show that the Luminosity of cluster galaxies is bimodal. Observation obviously will guide into the understanding of cluster formation and evolution. To fully understand the clues, however, we must detail, for clusters at high Z, the galaxies in-fall and clearly separate the field galaxies from the cluster members. We should then be able to follow the cluster evolutionary sequence.
We show, via the REFLEX survey, that clusters of galaxies are good markers of the LSS and that similar probes should be used at high redshifts as well. While some progress has been made with simulations and available samples, the need to increase the statistics and to peer deeply into the Universe is pressing. To this end we illustrate a first small step that we initiated with the XMM satellite and we conclude describing the proposal of an X-ray satellite, PANORAM-X, aimed to solve the questions we discussed in this paper.
