The Philosophy, Practice and Work Experience of Managers and Supervisors

Study 3

  • Chapter
Occupational Strain and Efficacy in Human Service Workers

Abstract

A recent focus in the Australian literature is that occupational strain is related to the way in which the human resource is managed (Toohey, 1994). Understanding the role of managers in preventing strain, contributing to strain, and managing strain was an expected departmental outcome following the implementation of the project recommendations. It was therefore proposed to conduct interviews with a sample of managers in the department and assess their current philosophy and practice with regard to workplace stress, difficulties and/or successes in the prevention of strain, or difficulties and/or successes in the rehabilitation of injured workers.
