Abstract

Here we report on different approaches to the fabrication, characterization, and modelling of inverse opals. We start from silica opal templates with sphere size in the range between 0.2 μm and 1.3 μm. The opal porous lattice is highly infiltrated with semiconductors (CdS, Ge) as well as polymers by several methods such as Chemical Bath Deposition, etc. Afterwards the template is removed from the composite, by a mild chemical etching method.1 Thus, an inverse opal is obtained. The periodicity of the template can be varied to place the photonic gaps or pseudogaps in different frequency regions.
