Abstract
A symposium entitled Advances in the Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Material Behavior in honor of Roger Fosdick was held as part of the 1999 Joint ASME Applied Mechanics and Materials Summer Conference at Virginia Tech on June 27–30, 1999. The symposium was organized by Yi-Chao Chen as a vehicle for recognizing Roger Fosdick for his many significant contributions to this area on the occasion of his (then) recent sixtieth birthday. Contributors to the symposium were invited to submit full-length paper versions of their presentations for possible publication in a special extended issue of the Journal of Elasticity, edited by Donald E. Carlson. The results appear here in this complete volume. We are grateful to Roger’s friend and former student K.R. Rajagopal for the following remarks.
