Abstract
The elemental composition and the energy spectra of the different kinds of primaries of high energy cosmic rays are only accessible by indirect measurements, i.e. by analyzing the appearance of extended air showers (EAS). This lecture gives an overview on mass sensitive observables in EAS measurements with earth-bound detector setups. Various different methods for the reconstruction of the chemical composition from observations in the KASCADE and other experiments are compared.
