Abstract

The shelf is usually understood as a vast sea-flooded mainland periphery. On the global scale, the shelf width varies from zero to 1500 km, the average value being 78 km. The shelf occupies about 28 mln. km2 or 8% of the World Ocean area or about 17% of the continental territory. The depth of the shelf varies from 20 to 550 m, usually about 200 m, the average being 133 m. as reported in the Geological Dictionary, 1978 [9].
