Abstract

In the article, a review of the research on permafrost carried out in the Italian Alps is presented. Starting from the late 1980s, different methodologies have been used, including the geomorphological survey and mapping of landforms and active processes, the survey of vegetation species and associations indicating the occurrence of permafrost, geophysical soundings (BTS, STG, electric, seismic, and electromagnetic), satellite images, and air-photo interpretation. Recently, two deep boreholes were drilled in the Alpine permafrost within the PACE (Permafrost And Climate in Europe), a research project funded by the European Union. The study of the thermal profiles of these boreholes and the laboratory analyses of the buried ice samples, will provide important information on the climatic variations that involved the area during the Holocene.
