Abstract

Periglacial features such as frost-wedges, cryoturbations, soil fragipan structures, pingo’s and others like sediment characteristics of loess, cover-sands, niveo-fluvial sandur deposits can be traced “step by step” from the Dutch-Belgian periglacial region extending all over the western European territory till the Mediterranean. After the World War II along with the search for building materials, revival of the study of surficial deposits took place and hundreds of sections were intensively recorded in loose deposits by several investigators in Belgium, France, Germany and Austria, respectively down to Spain, Italy, and via Sardinia to mainland Greece and Crete. More recently, relevant periglacial features seem also to appear all over North Africa from Morocco till Egypt and further down into Sudan along the Nile. It is very much questioned how far towards the Equator these features may eventually be followed within the African Rift both East and West. This southern extension of periglacial phenomena undoubtedly raises also the question to which extent permafrost is linked to the vicinity of an ice-cap or not
