Reforms in Support of Sustainable Forestry in the Russian Federation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: World Forests ((WFSE,volume 3))

Abstract

Russian forests and the two centuries of work of the Russian Forestry Service have unique global significance and relevance. The advent of post-industrial society, the ecological era and globalization in the mid-1980s brought about a market transformation in Russia and in the country’s forestry sector. Russia has become an active participant in the global ecological forum and has adapted many of its basic demands in her national forest legislation. However, the economics of forestry have not changed to the extent of fully meeting the demands of the new forest policy and the country’s international commitments. Sustainable forestry in Russia demands radical changes in the estimated budget system of financing inherited from the centrally planned economy
