Abstract

Significant recent progress has been made in the investigation of transitions from insulating to metallic states in materials at megabar to multimegabar pressures (eg, to >200 GPa) Solid xenon studied at pressures up to 155 GPa revealed a change from semiconducting to metallic at pressures between 121 and 138 GPa Anomalies in the conductivity at low temperatures in the vicinity of the transition suggest the formation of an intermediate excitomc insulator phase below 25 K prior to metallization Nitrogen transforms at 150 to 190 GPa (depending on temperature) to a non-diatomic semiconductor to at least 240 GPa. Similar experiments on boron demonstrate that it transforms from a low-pressure semiconducting phase not only to a metal but to a superconductor near 175 GPa. The superconducting T c increases from 6 K at 175 GPa to 11 2 K at 250 GPa Measurements on hydrogen show that the material remains in an insulating state across the transition to phase III near 150 GPa Prospects are favorable for extending such measurements to a wider range of materials and to still higher pressures in the search for new physical phenomena.
