Abstract

The neutral-ionic phase transition m quasi-one-dimensional mixed-stack charge-transfer organic complexes is a good example of high tunability and extreme co-operativity between non-linear electronic-structural excitations. This phase transition proceeds via a cascade of co-operative phenomena : in first step the formation of lattice-relaxed charge-transfer multi-excitons and in the second step their three-dimensional condensation and ordering. This is at the origin of singular (P, T) phase diagrams and new physical properties. In this paper, we present a brief overview of this unusual behaviour based on an unified physical picture and illustrated by recent high pressure studies.
