Since the early 1990’ s, the European Commission has been financing a considerable number of research initiatives related to the Chernobyl accident of 26 April 1986. In total sixteen research projects were undertaken, involving some eighty research groups in Western Europe and a hundred and twenty in the Russian Federation, the Republic of Ukraine and the Republic of Belarus.
