Abstract
The history of the State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology Vector dates back to 1974 when it was established as the All-Union Research Institute of Molecular Biology. Its major goal was to carry out classified research in the field of special viral pathogens within the frames of the former Soviet Union Program on Biological Defense, and it was funded from the State budget. This goal included investigating and evaluating the viruses that could be used by a potential enemy as biological weapons and developing the corresponding up-to-date vaccines and diagnostic means.
