Abstract

Interfaces play an important role in various areas of physical chemistry, both in fundamental and applied research. This includes phenomena in catalysis, colloid chemistry, tribology and, more generally, in interfacial thermodynamics and electrochemistry, to name only a few aspects. During the last two decades two novel interfacial topics have attracted considerable attention: phase transitions at interfaces or wetting phenomena and microscopy of interfaces, in particular, in situ investigations of electrocrystallization on the nanometer scale. Both topics will be introduced in this lecture and first results and open problems will be discussed focusing on ionic liquids.
