Abstract

Before taking measures on desertification control, ecologists must give information to planners about the degree of desertification and about the ecological cons traints of lands to be improved. Would it be possible to transform desert into “a flourishing land”, as apologists of nature remaking of Stalin’s epoch demanded? We must be realistic and we must attack more limited tasks — rehabilitation of desertified lands. We may suppose that in several cases the process of desertification is irreversible. According to Floret & Potanier (1982), reversibility is the ability of a degraded ecosystem to recover its conditions after 25 years of total protection. We may suppose that in several cases the process of desertification is irreversible. In this case ameliorative measures should be aimed at creation of a new anthropogenic ecosystem differing from that existed before.

It is a long lane that has no turning.
