Abstract
-
To assess lichen growth, health and changes in assemblage composition by analysing digital photographic images using freely available image processing software.
-
To evaluate lichen distribution, age, reproductive capcaityand longevity.
-
To assess the impact of anthropogenic activities and of pollutants on lichens.
Rapid advances in computer hardware, digital cameras and image analysis software have allowed comprehensive studies which were impractical a few years ago. Digital photography enables visualisation of images in the field and rapid downloading of images to a computer for growth measurements [2, 4]. Young thalli easily missed in the field may be magnified and future verification of taxa is also possible.
