Myth: A single hemodialysis treatment prevents uremic bleeding and restores platelet function

Abstract

According to “MKSAP 11” (Medical knowledge Self Assessment Program, American College of Physicians, 2000), abnormalities of platelet aggregation and deregulation are well described. In the preoperative and post-operative setting, significant bleeding can be averted by preoperative dialysis. MKSAP 11 asserts that platelet function can often, in fact, be restored through a single dialysis. There is, however, no good evidence in the literature supporting this conjecture. Indeed, the cause of uremic bleeding is still a subject that is debated (1-8).
