Abstract
The role of calcitriol in the management of the predialysis patient is not fully defined. Of more then 20 articles on the subject, most indicate that low dosages of calcitriol, 0.25 mcg/day, or low dosages of alfacalcidiol, are safe and effective in retarding progression of renal osteodystrophy. In addition, small doses of calcitriol and alfacalcidiol are rarely associated with renal function impairment so long as calcium levels are carefully monitored.
