Abstract

In this contribution an overview is given about olefin metathesis as a tool for direct synthesis of PPV, OPV and of their substituted derivatives. Starting with ringsubstituted p-divinylbenzenes the metathesis polycondensation leads to easily processable products with all-trans configuration and defect-free structure. Among the Schrock-type alkylidene complexes Mo(=CH-CMe2R)(=NPh2,6Me2)[OCMe(CF3)2]2 (R = Me and Ph) were the most suitable catalysts. The PV oligomers obtained show a very low polydispersity. The average degree of polymerisation can be varied by solvent and temperature. The substituted PV oligomers show valuable optical properties, which can be fine tuned by choice of the substituent and of the conjugation length. Their fluorescence quantum yields are high in solution as well as in solid state. The disubstituted PV products are liquid crystalline.
