Abstract
We form chains with non-brownian superparamagnetic particles, under a magnetic field, by activating a flow in a microchannel. Experiments show that the chain length grows linearly with time, at a rate proportional to Q0.6±0.1 (where Q is the flow-rate). This observation agrees with theory, which predicts an exponent equal to 3/5. We thus demonstrate here a way to form chains of magnetic particles of any sizes, in microchannels, at rates considerably faster than diffusion, by activating a flow.
