Abstract
This paper examines some of the challenges faced by small observatories in the coming decade. Changes in planning scientific objectives, operations, personnel, ftmding, instrumentation, etc. can all help bring telescopes of aperture smaller than ~4-m into the 21st century as full partners with the world’s largest telescopes. If they are to continue to play their essential roles in basic science in the 21st century, these new strategies must be developed and implemented now.
