Abstract
In queueing theory, one field of steady progress is the conception of arrival processes. Back in Erlang’s times it was reasonable to assume independent and homogeneous users, which leads to the model of a Poisson arrival process (cf. Doob [52], pp.401ff). However, network traffic has become varied and strongly correlated today. Moreover, limited capacities lead to models which take inhomogeneous traffic into account, in order to profit from day times with less traffic intensity.
