Abstract

The evolution of the binary pulsar PSR J1740–5340-recently discovered as a binary with orbital period of 32.5 hrs in the Globular Cluster NGC 6397— must have started very close than the “bifurcation period”. For any assumption, both for the systemic angular momentum losses and for the specific angular momentum lost with the matter flowing out of the system at the epoch of radio-ejection (Burden et al. 2001, 2002), the final stage of evolution is a low mass helium white dwarf not smaller than ≅ 0.2 M, incompatible with the observed location of the “non-flickering” objects identified as helium white dwarfs by Taylor et al. (2001)
