Abstract

We have conducted a survey for magnetic fields in 64 southern white dwarfs using Zeeman spectropolarimetry with the purpose of obtaining a magnetic field distribution of white dwarfs and, in particular, to find white dwarfs with weak fields. Next, we re-evaluate the fraction and field distribution of magnetic white dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood, and we compare the field distribution of known magnetic white dwarfs to a recent determination of the field distribution in Ap/Bp stars. We discuss the implications for the origin of magnetic fields in white dwarf stars.
