Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration brings together about 220 physicists from 27 institutes from Europe, Russia, Japan and India. The goal is to study the structure and spectroscopy of hadrons by a series of experiments with muon and hadron beams in the energy range of 100–200 GeV. The experiment [1] is located at the M2 beam line at the CERN SPS. In 1995 the project started out with two letters of intent which were merged into a common proposal and which was fully approved in September 1998. The first construction phase ended with a commissioning run in 2001. In this article the results of this commissioning run are presented and an outlook on the 2002 run is given.
