Abstract

The HERMES experiment has measured the transverse polarization of Λ hyperons produced inclusively in quasi-real photon-nucleon scattering at a positron beam energy of 27.6 GeV. The average transverse polarization was found to be P Λ n = 0.058 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.006 (syst). The dependence of P Λ n on transverse momentum p T and on the hyperons’ light-cone momentum fraction ζ has been investigated. The measured polarization for Λ exhibit different behavior in the current and target fragmentation regions.
