Abstract

The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has greatly extended our scope of evolved stars. Data in the wavelength region inaccessible from the ground unveil new aspects of the objects. Here we review the studies of time variations of molecular bands in the near- and mid-infrared spectra of oxygen-rich stars observed by the Short-Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS). These molecular bands are thought to arise in the extended region of the atmosphere and the inner part of the circumstellar envelope. It is seen that there are two regions in the extended atmosphere; one follows the optical variability and the other does not. We argue that pulsation shocks running through the atmosphere play an essential role on the variations

Based on observations with ISO, an ESA project with instruments funded by ESA Member States (especially the PI countries: France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom) with the participation of ISAS and NASA. The SWS is a joint project of SRON and MPE
