Abstract
A common experience of beginning teachers is to encounter new pitfalls at every turn. However, in many New Zealand schools, beginning science teachers also find help in every direction. The story below highlights the kinds of support that a new science teacher, Sarah, receives at her urban secondary school, serving 1200 pupils from grades 8–12. Like all of the science teachers in the school, Sarah teaches courses at both lower and upper grades. It is term two (of four) in Sarah’s first year of teaching.
